I've started out with the idea of playing the given descending melody as syncopated / funky flute line variations in 16ths notes and added some ascending / uplifting sections for contrast. As I was struggling to make the syncopation work in 6/8, I've changed the time signature to standard 4/4. And, of course, for additional funkiness this needed a scale featuring a b7.
